Orbit Design Guidelines

Setting design & experience standards for Volvo’s native employee tools.

Client: Volvo Car Sweden
Agency: BBH Stockholm
Role: Design Director, UX Writer
Services: Native, design system, UX writing
Year: 2023

  • Constantly developing and reinventing digital tools for their employees, Volvo Car Sweden were in need of guidelines to facilitate their growing portfolio of native products and services.

Our team was tasked to create digital design guidelines for native apps that can be shared and co-developed between a number of cross-functional teams.

  • “Orbit” was created for the core user needs of Volvo employees such as Service Technicians and Sales Agents. Based on user interviews and analysis, a set of Design Principles and UX Foundations were created to guide decision-making processes and drive value.

To facilitate design and development, a token-based design system including colours, typography and motion was made to build over time. Our team also set guidelines on app icons design, naming and native app development.

  • In early 2024, Orbit is successfully being rolled out to designers, developers and stakeholders with a hugely positive response. The guidelines will ensure continued user-centred design and development of the highest quality for Volvo enterprise apps.
